You will probably need internet in Vietnam before you need your suitcase.

• Open a map.
• Message your accommodation host.
• Call Grab or Green SM.
• Contact your transfer driver.
• Check your hotel address.

So I would sort out your connection before the trip.

After that, you can choose whichever option works better for you: eSIM or a local physical SIM card.

📱 Why you should not rely only on Wi-Fi

Vietnam really does have plenty of cafés, restaurants, hotels and shopping malls with free Wi-Fi, but depending on it completely is inconvenient.

You may need internet at exactly the moment when there is no café or familiar network nearby.

For example:

• you have just left the airport and want to call a car;
• the driver cannot find your address;
• your apartment host has sent check-in instructions;
• you need to open a map and figure out where you are actually going.

So I would have mobile internet at least for the first few days of the trip.

eSIM or a local SIM card

There is no single right answer here. It depends on:

• how long you are planning to stay in Vietnam;
• whether you need a local phone number;
• whether you want to deal with mobile connection after arrival;
• whether you are planning to travel around the country.

eSIM is a good option if you want to arrive with internet already working

The main advantage of eSIM, for me, is simple.

You can sort this out before you even get on the plane.

You install the eSIM in advance and connect it to a mobile network after landing.

You do not need to remove your main SIM card. You do not need to look for a mobile shop straight after the airport. You do not need to find Wi-Fi first just to call a taxi.

📲 When a physical SIM makes more sense

If you are coming to Vietnam for a longer stay or specifically need a local phone number, a physical SIM may be more convenient.

For example, a local number can be useful for certain local services, registrations or communication. In that case, I would not buy the first SIM someone offers you after you leave the airport.

It is better to go to an official mobile operator store and calmly check exactly what you are signing up for.

Before paying, ask:

• which plan is being activated;
• how much mobile data is included;
• how many days the package is valid for;
• whose name the SIM card is registered under;
• whether the plan can be renewed;
• what happens when the package expires.

This is especially important if you need the SIM for several months rather than one week.

📡 Which mobile operator to choose in Vietnam

Vietnam has several major mobile operators. My personal favourite is Viettel.

This is not an ad and not an attempt to say that it is objectively the best option for everyone. It is simply based on my own experience.

I used Viettel, while my husband used MobiFone.

We travelled through different parts of Vietnam, and sometimes the difference in coverage was noticeable. In places where MobiFone became weaker, my phone still worked normally.

If you are flying to Nha Trang for a week and are hardly planning to leave the city, this difference may not matter much to you at all.

If you are planning to travel around the country, I would look not only at the price of the plan, but also at coverage along your route.

🏪 Where to buy a local SIM

The most straightforward option is an official operator store.

Buying a SIM at the airport or in tourist areas is usually easier. But easier does not always mean better. Sometimes tourists buy a package without really understanding:

what exactly has been activated and how long it will work.

So if you need a local number for a longer stay, I would not rush. You can arrive with an eSIM, get to your accommodation, check in, and only then choose a local SIM.

That way, you do not have to solve the connection issue in the first 30 minutes after getting off the plane.

✈️ If you are travelling to Vietnam for a holiday

For a trip of one week, two weeks or a few weeks, I would first look at eSIM.

Especially if what you mainly need is internet for:

• maps;
• messengers;
• taxis;
• delivery;
• social media;
• bookings;
• getting around the city.

In this scenario, you may not need a local phone number at all.

Once you arrive, you will already be able to connect to the network and deal with everything else without rushing.

🏡 If you are moving or staying for several months

Here, I would not choose automatically. You can start with an eSIM and then see whether you actually need a local number.

After the first few days, it will become much clearer:

• which apps you use;
• whether you need a number for local services;
• how much mobile data you actually use;
• whether you will be travelling around the country;
• which operator works best where you live.

After that, you can calmly get a physical SIM from an official store.
