What to Pack for Vietnam

Are you coming to Vietnam for a vacation or planning to relocate?

The packing list will be very different. If you're visiting for a couple of weeks, don't overload your suitcase. If you're moving for several months or longer, it's worth preparing a few important things before you leave home.

✈️ If You're Coming on Vacation

The biggest mistake I see tourists make is bringing way too much.

If you're staying only in Nha Trang, you probably won't need warm clothes. Lightweight summer outfits are all you'll wear most of the time.

If you're planning to visit Da Lat or travel around northern Vietnam, pack a light hoodie, sweater, or a pair of long pants. Evenings there can be surprisingly cool. I also wouldn't recommend filling your suitcase to the limit.

Leave some space for the trip home.

Many travelers barely wear half the clothes they bring, but somehow always need extra luggage on the way back. And if you decide to go shopping in Ho Chi Minh City, you'll definitely appreciate the extra room.

Cosmetics & Toiletries

There's no need to pack heavy bottles of shampoo, conditioner, shower gel, or skincare unless you have products you simply can't live without.

Vietnam has a huge selection of cosmetics, especially Korean brands. Many products are cheaper than in other countries. Beauty stores, pharmacies, and local shops are everywhere.

Shoes

Keep it simple.

Usually, you'll only need:

• sandals or flip-flops for the beach;
• comfortable sneakers or walking shoes.

🏡 If You're Relocating

If you're moving to Vietnam for several months or longer, preparation starts before your flight.

Documents

I highly recommend leaving a power of attorney with someone you trust. If you own property, have paperwork waiting back home, or something unexpected happens, they'll be able to handle it for you.

I also recommend bringing your important documents with you:

• passport;
• national ID (if applicable);
• birth certificate;
• marriage certificate;
• any other documents that may be useful abroad.

If possible, prepare certified translations before leaving your home country. Doing this abroad is usually much more expensive.

Don't Bring Too Much

Almost every expat goes through the same experience. At first, everything seems essential. A few months later, half of those things are still sitting untouched.

Before moving, go through your clothes, electronics, and household items. Some things are easier to sell before you leave and buy again after you arrive. If you move between countries often, this usually saves both money and stress.

Clothes

There's no perfect packing list. Everyone has different habits and a different wardrobe. Just remember a few things:

• Nha Trang is hot most of the year.
• Lightweight clothes will be your everyday choice.
• From December to March, evenings can feel cooler.
• During the rainy season, a light hoodie or jacket is worth bringing.

Expensive Items

If you're only coming for a short trip, I wouldn't bring expensive bags or accessories unless you really need them. Vietnam is very humid.

If leather items or metal accessories sit unused for a while, mold can appear surprisingly quickly.
