Safari in Kruger National Park

Whenever people talk about going on safari in South Africa, it often sounds complicated and expensive. But stories from our readers prove that it doesn't have to be.
Vlada and a group of friends explored Kruger National Park on their own. They rented a car, stayed in a villa near the park, and spent several days searching for wildlife.
Here's her experience, which may be helpful if you're planning a similar trip.
📍 Why They Chose Marloth Park
Instead of staying inside Kruger National Park, they chose Marloth Park, a small town located right next to the park.
According to Vlada, it turned out to be an excellent decision.
Pros
- only about 30 minutes to the nearest Kruger National Park gate;
- a spacious private villa at a reasonable price;
- zebras, antelopes, and other wildlife freely roam through the neighborhood and can often be seen right outside the house;
- supermarkets and gas stations are nearby;
- similar accommodation inside the park is significantly more expensive.
Cons
The only downside was having to drive to the park entrance every day. But according to Vlada, it never felt like an inconvenience.
💡 Tips That Helped During the Trip
Here are a few recommendations Vlada shared after her trip:
- park entry is paid once per day, and after entering you can leave and return without paying again;
- the best time for a safari is early morning (approximately 5:00 AM–10:00 AM) and the hours before sunset;
- the park rangers have a WhatsApp group where visitors share recent wildlife sightings, making it much easier to decide which part of the park to explore.
💰 How Much Did the Safari Cost?
The trip was shared between four people, which helped reduce many of the expenses.
According to Vlada, the three-day trip cost approximately:
- around $900 for two people;
- around $1,936 for a group of four.
💡 If you're planning a safari, traveling with friends can significantly reduce the cost of accommodation, transportation, and other expenses.
🦁 Animals They Managed to See
In just two days, Vlada and her friends spotted:
- elephants;
- giraffes;
- zebras;
- buffalo;
- hippos;
- hyenas;
- a crocodile;
- warthogs;
- antelopes;
- many bird species;
- a pride of lions;
- a leopard;
- a honey badger;
- a mongoose;
- a galago.
