A small town in the Cape Winelands, about an hour's drive from Cape Town. Today, Franschhoek is best known for the Wine Tram, award-winning restaurants, and beautiful wine estates. If you're planning a trip through South Africa's wine region, there's a good chance Franschhoek will be one of the highlights of your itinerary.

The town's name means "French Corner", and its history is closely connected to the French Huguenots who settled here in the late 17th century. They brought their winemaking knowledge with them, helping establish what would become one of South Africa's most famous wine regions.

Where is Franschhoek?

Franschhoek is located about 75 kilometers (47 miles) from Cape Town. The drive takes approximately one hour.

The town sits between Stellenbosch and Paarl, making it an easy stop on any Cape Winelands itinerary. If your schedule allows, I recommend spending a full day here—or even staying overnight.

The History of Franschhoek

In the late 1600s, French Huguenots fled religious persecution in France and settled in this valley.

Many of them were experienced winemakers, and they established some of the first vineyards and wine farms in South Africa. Over the centuries, the valley grew into one of the country's best-known wine-producing regions.

Today, you can still see the French influence in the names of wine estates, local architecture, and the town's history.

Why Visit Franschhoek?

Most people come to Franschhoek for three reasons: wine estates, great restaurants, and the Wine Tram.

A typical day usually includes:

visiting a few wine estates;
wine tastings;
lunch at a wine estate restaurant;
a walk through the town center;
a ride on the Wine Tram.

If you want to experience South Africa's wine region, Franschhoek is one of the best places to start.

Wine Tram

The Wine Tram is Franschhoek's most famous attraction.

It connects many of the region's wine estates using a combination of vintage-style trams and shuttle buses. You can hop on and off throughout the day, spend as much time as you like at each estate, and continue your journey whenever you're ready.

It's one of the easiest ways to enjoy wine tastings without worrying about driving.

The Best Wine Estates

There are dozens of wine estates around Franschhoek, so it's impossible to visit them all in one trip. If it's your first visit, I'd recommend starting with a few of the most well-known.

La Motte

One of the region's oldest wine estates. Along with wine tastings, you'll find a restaurant, an art gallery, and beautiful gardens to explore.

Grande Provence Wine Estate

A modern wine estate featuring a restaurant, contemporary art gallery, and beautifully landscaped grounds. It's a great place to spend a relaxed afternoon.

Boschendal

One of South Africa's most famous wine estates. It offers restaurants, a farm shop, picnic areas, walking trails, and plenty of space to spend almost an entire day.

Where to Eat

Franschhoek is often considered one of South Africa's culinary capitals.

You'll find fine dining restaurants, family-run cafés, wine bars, and estate restaurants throughout the valley. Many of them use locally sourced ingredients and seasonal produce, so menus change throughout the year.

How Much Time Should You Spend?

If you only want to visit one wine estate and walk around town, a few hours will be enough.

If you're planning to ride the Wine Tram, visit several estates, and enjoy lunch, I'd recommend setting aside a full day.

If you have the time, staying overnight is even better. You'll be able to experience the region at a much slower pace.

How to Get There

The easiest way to visit Franschhoek is by car.

It's about an hour's drive from Cape Town, and having your own vehicle gives you the freedom to choose which wine estates you'd like to visit.

If you don't want to drive after wine tastings, you can take the Wine Tram, book a private transfer, or hire a driver.

My Advice

If I were visiting Franschhoek for the first time, I wouldn't try to squeeze as many wine estates as possible into one day.

Instead, I'd choose two or three, enjoy a long lunch, leave time for a walk around town, and take the day at a relaxed pace. In my experience, that's the best way to enjoy Franschhoek.
