Paarl: Vineyards, Granite Mountains and a Different Side of the Cape Winelands

Annotation: Why Paarl is worth visiting if you have already been to Stellenbosch and Franschhoek: the history of the town, wineries, granite mountains, farms, unusual places and a one-day route.

If you have already heard of Stellenbosch and Franschhoek, Paarl could easily be next on your list.

It is about a 45-minute drive from Cape Town and stretches across a large area around Paarl Mountain and the Drakenstein Valley. But the main point is that this is not simply another wine region next to Stellenbosch.

Paarl is a place where the Cape Winelands feel more like real rural life than a tourist route.

There are old farms, vineyards, mountains, fruit farms, historic streets, local producers and wineries that exist alongside the town rather than somewhere completely separate from it.

🍷 How Paarl differs from Stellenbosch and Franschhoek

I would roughly divide them like this.

Stellenbosch is the most obvious choice for a first introduction to the Cape Winelands. There are plenty of famous estates, restaurants, beautiful historic buildings and a very active wine culture.

Franschhoek is more of a picture-postcard destination. Beautiful valleys, restaurants, luxury wineries and the Wine Tram, which allows you to move between estates without constantly getting behind the wheel.

And Paarl is more spacious and down-to-earth.

There is less of a feeling that the entire region was designed specifically for tourists. Vineyards sit alongside an ordinary town, farms and small producers, while the historic centre is literally close to the wine estates.

Paarl also has its own wine character.

The local climate is particularly well suited to Shiraz, while Chenin Blanc, Chardonnay, Pinotage, Viognier and Mourvèdre are also well represented. Overall, the Paarl Wine Route is known for richer red wines and fresh whites.

So if Stellenbosch is a place to explore as classic wine country, in Paarl I would be more interested in looking at the region as a whole.

🪨 Where did Paarl come from?

The town's name is connected to the mountain that is impossible to miss.

In 1657, explorer Abraham Gabbema saw huge granite boulders on Paarl Mountain shining in the sunlight after rain. He called them the “Diamond” and the “Pearl” — Diamant en Peerlbergh.

The name Paarl gradually emerged from this and is connected to the Dutch word parel, meaning “pearl”.

The mountain itself is much older than the town.

Its granite formed around 500 million years ago, which is why the landscape is so distinctive. Vineyards here seem almost squeezed between enormous rounded granite formations.

🇫🇷 There is a French connection here too

In 1687, the first European farming settlements began appearing in the valley.

A year later, French Huguenots arrived at the Cape, many of whom had backgrounds in farming and winemaking. They became part of the farming culture that later shaped the entire region.

Paarl is officially considered the third-oldest settlement in South Africa. The town's tourism route begins with this agricultural history: the first 20 farmers received land along the Berg River here in 1687.

And the French connection is more than just a historical footnote.

Some wineries in the region can still trace their history back to the late 17th century. For example, Vendôme is connected to the Le Roux family, who arrived at the Cape in 1688, while Calais received its land in 1692.

🍇 How many wineries are there today?

If we look specifically at the Paarl Wine Route, the Paarl tourism portal currently lists 19 wine farms and wine-related destinations.

They are very different from one another: from large, well-known estates such as Nederburg to smaller family wineries and historic farms. The list includes Fairview, Rhebokskloof, Mellasat, Perdeberg, Landskroon, Under Oaks and others.

And this is an important point: Paarl is not one winery, or even a handful of “must-see” places.

You can come here several times and create a completely different route each time.

And this is where Paarl becomes more interesting than an ordinary wine day.

🧀 Fairview Wine & Cheese

A good first stop if you want to combine wine and food.

Fairview produces its own wines and cheeses and has tastings, a farm shop and a restaurant. You can spend a couple of hours here rather than simply stopping for a few glasses of wine.

🍫 Spice Route

If you are travelling with a group and not everyone wants to spend the entire day focused exclusively on wine, head to Spice Route.

It is a whole destination with different local producers. You can try wine, chocolate, beer and other products, have something to eat and simply wander around the grounds.

🗿 Afrikaans Language Monument

One of the most unusual places in Paarl.

The monument is dedicated to the development of Afrikaans and stands on the slopes of Paarl Mountain. Even if the history of the language is not particularly interesting to you, it is worth coming here for the architecture and the views across the valley.

And if you are interested, this is a place where you can literally see part of the history of a language that developed within South Africa's complex cultural landscape.

🏛️ Historic centre

Paarl has another unusual feature: Main Road stretches for roughly 12 kilometres.

Along it you will find Cape Dutch, Victorian and Edwardian buildings, cafés, restaurants, small shops and galleries. It is a good way to experience Paarl not as a “stop between wineries”, but as a real historic town.

⛪ Strooidak Church

Another unusual detail is that a small Cabernet Sauvignon vineyard stands right next to the historic church.

The church itself is connected to the history of the Huguenots. The first services here took place as early as the 18th century, while the current building has been in use since 1805.

This is one of those places where the history of the town and winemaking literally occupy the same piece of land.

If you want to look at South African winemaking history from another angle, you can visit KWV.

There are not only tastings here but also wine and food pairing experiences, while KWV itself holds an important place in the history of South Africa's wine industry.

🥾 Paarl Mountain

And if you feel like moving a little after all the tastings, Paarl Mountain has walking and hiking routes.

There are quite a few outdoor activities around Paarl in general: hiking, MTB, horse riding and places near the wineries where you can spend a day outdoors.

So, is Paarl worth visiting?

Yes, especially if you have already been to Stellenbosch and Franschhoek.

Paarl does not try to be their copy.

You can come here for the wine, but end up spending the day among granite mountains, old farms, cheeses, historic architecture, local producers and the ordinary life of the town.

And I think that is exactly why it deserves a place on your itinerary — not simply as “another wine region”.
