Staying Connected in South Africa

Finding internet in South Africa is not a problem.

The real question is something else: do you want to deal with mobile connection after you arrive, or would you rather sort it out before you even leave home?

There are basically two options:

  • buy a local SIM card once you arrive in South Africa;
  • install an eSIM in advance and get online as soon as you land.

Let’s see which option works better for whom.

📱 Option 1. Buy a local SIM in South Africa

Several major mobile operators work in South Africa:

  • Vodacom;
  • MTN;
  • Cell C;
  • Telkom.

You can buy a tourist SIM at the airport or later in the city at mobile operator stores and other official points of sale.

For example, Vodacom and MTN offer tourist SIM cards and mobile packages, including at Cape Town International Airport.

But there is one thing worth keeping in mind.

Local SIM cards require registration

In South Africa, SIM cards must go through mandatory RICA registration.

Foreign travellers will need at least a valid passport. Depending on the operator and registration method, you may also be asked for additional information or proof of where you are staying.

So the process is simple:

  1. find a mobile store or official point of sale;
  2. choose a SIM and mobile plan;
  3. show your documents;
  4. complete the registration;
  5. activate the SIM.

There is nothing complicated about it, it just takes a little time.

🌍 Option 2. Install an eSIM before your flight

If you want to get off the plane and immediately call a taxi, message your family or open a map, it is easier to sort out your connection in advance.

That is why we created FROGI eSIM.

You choose South Africa, select the amount of data and validity period you need, pay for the package and receive a QR code by email.

It is better to install your eSIM while you are still at home and have a stable internet connection.

After you land, your phone will connect to an available local network and mobile internet will start working without searching for a store or replacing your physical SIM card.

How it works

  1. Choose the country and plan on the website or in the bot
  2. Pay for your eSIM.
  3. Receive the QR code by email.
  4. Install the eSIM before your trip.
  5. Connect to a local network when you arrive.

Your regular SIM stays in your phone.

That means you can keep your main number for messages and calls while using the eSIM for mobile data.

I would install the eSIM before the flight. You need internet for the installation itself, and looking for Wi-Fi after landing just so you can connect to another internet service feels slightly ironic.

🐸 FROGI eSIM works beyond South Africa

If South Africa is only one stop on a bigger trip, you can keep using the service for your next destinations.

At the moment, FROGI offers eSIM plans for 197 countries.

So before your next trip, you do not need to start searching again for where to buy a local SIM: simply choose your next destination and connect the package that suits you.

It is especially convenient if you are travelling through several countries in one trip.

📲 Will eSIM work with your phone?

First, check whether your smartphone supports eSIM. The easiest way is:

dial `*#06#`

If you see an EID among your device details, your smartphone supports eSIM.

Your phone should also not be locked to SIM cards from only one mobile operator.

So what should you choose: SIM or eSIM?

There is no single right answer.

A physical SIM is a good option if:

  • you are staying in South Africa for a longer period;
  • you need a local phone number;
  • you are happy to spend a little time after arrival buying and registering a SIM.

eSIM is more convenient if:

  • you are travelling as a tourist;
  • you want internet immediately after landing;
  • you do not want to look for a mobile store;
  • you want to keep your main number in your phone;
  • you are travelling through several countries.

For a short trip, I would sort out the internet before leaving.

Because after ten hours on a plane, I want to open a map, call a car and get to my accommodation, not start my introduction to Cape Town by registering a SIM card.

✈️ What to do before your flight

If you choose eSIM:

  • check whether your phone supports eSIM;
  • choose a plan for South Africa;
  • install the eSIM at home;
  • turn on data roaming for it straight away, and if you still have questions, message @Froginya_travel
  • do not delete it after installation;
  • save the instructions in case you need to check the settings later.

And then you can simply fly. Once you land, your connection will already be waiting for you along with Cape Town.

We’ll cover that next.
