🚋 If you want to visit several wineries in one day, taste wine and avoid having to find a designated driver — Franschhoek Wine Tram is one of the most convenient options.
And it is not simply a tourist bus that was put between the wineries.
The route uses a historic railway line built in 1904. Originally, it was used to transport farm produce and provided an alternative to ox-drawn carts. Later, steam trains ran along the line, followed by diesel trains, until railway service was largely discontinued in the 1990s.
The line remained unused for more than ten years until 2012, when it was brought back to life as the Wine Tram. In 2017, double-decker trams styled after historic Blackpool Corporation carriages from the 1920s were introduced.
Today, it is quite a fun combination: part of the journey takes place on a real open-air tram running along the historic railway tracks, while the rest is by open-air bus between wineries located further away from the railway.
🍷 How does it work?
The most popular option is Hop-on Hop-off.
You choose one of the current lines, arrive at the terminal and then hop off at the wineries you like. You can spend as much time there as the schedule allows, then board the next tram or bus.
Wine Tram currently offers 5 lines and around 30 winery stops. It is impossible to visit them all in one day, so it is better to check in advance which estates are available on your chosen line.
Buy your ticket in advance
You can buy your ticket on the official Wine Tram website or through GetYourGuide.
Booking in advance is especially important if you want to take a specific line or start your trip at a particular time, as the number of tickets available each day is limited.

Important: Wine Tram has changed its route system. Check the current lines on the official website before your trip.
And honestly, it sounds much more enjoyable than spending the whole day behind the wheel between glasses of wine. Of course, if you are travelling with someone who does not drink alcohol, you can also rent a convertible through @capecarsmanager.
