How to Get from Cape Town Airport

How to Get from Cape Town Airport

After a long flight, there is usually one question you want to solve first:

how to get out of the airport and reach your accommodation safely, preferably without any adventures in the first 30 minutes of your introduction to South Africa.

In Cape Town, there are several options:

  • call a taxi through an app;
  • book a transfer in advance;
  • pick up a rental car;
  • use an official airport taxi.

Which option is best depends on how many people are travelling, how much luggage you have, and whether you will need a car later.

🚕 The easiest option: Uber or Bolt

Uber and Bolt officially operate at Cape Town International Airport.

If you want to leave the airport on your own, I would choose one of these apps.

You can immediately see:

  • the price of the trip;
  • driver details;
  • vehicle registration number;
  • route;
  • trip information on your phone.

Once you book a ride, the app will show you where to go to meet your driver.

Important

Do not agree to rides with people who approach you inside the airport and offer you a “taxi” directly.

Cape Town International Airport specifically recommends using only authorised operators.

For one or two people with a normal amount of luggage, Uber or Bolt is usually the easiest option. Leave the airport, order a car and go.

🚐 If you have a lot of luggage or are travelling as a group: transfer

If you are travelling with a large group, children, several suitcases, or simply do not want to deal with anything after a long flight, it is more convenient to book a transfer in advance.

This is a different scenario.

The driver already knows:

  • your flight number;
  • arrival time;
  • where you need to go;
  • how many passengers there will be;
  • how much luggage you have.

If the flight is delayed, the driver follows the actual arrival time.

Once you come out, you are met, helped with your bags, your luggage is loaded, and you are driven to the required address.

Sometimes after a long flight, this is exactly what you want to pay for: not having to make any more decisions.

How to book a transfer

To make a booking, contact the manager in advance: @capecarsmanager

Send:

  • arrival date;
  • flight number;
  • number of passengers;
  • amount of luggage;
  • destination address or area.

*The price depends on the route and the vehicle.

A larger group may need a minivan, and if you really have a lot of luggage, it is better to mention this to the manager straight away so they can choose a suitable vehicle and arrange additional luggage space if needed.

Transfers are available not only to Cape Town, but also to other areas and towns across the Western Cape.

If you need an unusual route, simply arrange it in advance.

🚗 Another option

rent a car straight away.

If you are going to need a car during your trip anyway, you can solve this question immediately after arrival.

In Cape Town, having a car gives you a lot of freedom.

Distances here are large, and many of the places worth visiting in the Western Cape are outside the city centre:

  • wine regions;
  • beaches;
  • nature routes;
  • small towns;
  • the coastline.

Sometimes it is easy to get to a beautiful place by taxi, but finding a ride back can be much more entertaining.

So if you are planning to travel around actively, having your own car can make the trip much easier.

Book a car yourself

Our partner has a bot: @CapeCars_bot

You can use it to check available cars and book a suitable option yourself.

A credit card is not required to make a booking. Payment options can be arranged when the car is booked.

If the car or dates you need are not available in the bot, I still recommend messaging the manager: @capecarsmanager

Sometimes a car has just become available or the fleet has been updated, but the information has not appeared in the bot yet. The manager can check available options manually.

🚖 Official airport taxi

There is one more option: use an official taxi directly at the airport.

Cape Town International Airport has authorised taxi services operating through official desks inside the terminal.

This is a perfectly normal option if you do not want to use apps or book a transfer in advance.

But the same rule applies here: do not follow someone who simply approaches you in the arrivals area and offers you a car.

Look for an official desk or use an authorised service.

🚌 What about the airport bus?

If you see advice in older guides suggesting the MyCiTi Airport Service, check when the guide was published.

At the time of checking, the direct MyCiTi bus service between the airport and the city is suspended.

So for now, I would not rely on it as a way to get from the airport after arrival.

Transport arrangements can change, so it is worth checking the latest information again before your trip.

Which option is right for you?

If you are travelling alone or as a couple

Uber or Bolt.

The easiest option if you do not have much luggage and simply need to get to your accommodation.

If you are travelling with family, a group or a lot of luggage

Transfer.

You do not need to look for a car after arrival, wonder whether all the suitcases will fit, or figure out where to go.

If you are planning to travel around Cape Town and the Western Cape a lot

Rental car.

Pick up the car and from that point on, you are no longer dependent on taxi availability or distances.

If you do not want to use apps

Go to the official airport taxi desk.

⚠️ And a little about safety

Cape Town is one of those cities where it is better not to ignore basic safety rules.

Not because you need to arrive here feeling constantly anxious.

It is simply better to switch on a few habits from the very beginning:

  • do not get into cars with random drivers;
  • check the vehicle registration number;
  • do not display large amounts of cash;
  • keep an eye on your luggage and phone;
  • do not leave valuables visible inside the car;
  • download an app with offline maps;
  • know in advance how you are getting to your accommodation.

We will separately put together a basic guide to safety in Cape Town, because here it is much more useful to calmly know the rules in advance than to learn them after an unpleasant situation has already happened.

✅ In short

  • Uber / Bolt — if you simply want to leave the airport on your own.
  • Transfer — if you want someone to already be waiting for you.
  • Car rental — if you want to have your own wheels from day one.
  • Official airport taxi — if you prefer to arrange everything directly inside the terminal.

And all those random “taxi, taxi” offers in the arrivals area? We just ignore them.

You have only just landed. There will be plenty of adventures in Cape Town without starting with that.
