How to get from Cape Town Airport

After a long flight, you usually want to solve just one problem: leave the airport and get to your accommodation without any extra hassle.

In Cape Town, there are only a few main options, and the choice mostly depends on three things: what time you arrive, how much luggage you have and whether you will need a car afterwards.

In short:

• Uber or Bolt — if there are one or two of you and you do not have much luggage.
• Transfer — if you arrive late, travel with children, in a larger group or with several suitcases.
• Rental car delivered to the airport — if you will need a car throughout the trip anyway.

There is also an official airport taxi service.

🚕 Uber or Bolt

For most travellers, this is the easiest option.

You order a car through the app and can see the fare, driver details, registration number and route. After booking, the app will show you the pickup point at the airport.

Before getting in, always check that the vehicle registration number and driver details match what you see in the app.

If the car or driver does not match the information in the app, do not get in.

And do not accept random “taxi” offers from people approaching you in the arrivals area.

For one or two people with a normal amount of luggage, Uber or Bolt is usually enough.

🚐 When a transfer is a better option

A transfer makes sense when you do not want to deal with logistics at all after landing.

Especially if:

• you arrive late in the evening or at night;
• you are travelling with children;
• there are several people in your group;
• you have a lot of luggage;
• your accommodation is far from the airport;
• you do not want to look for the taxi pickup point after a long flight.

The driver receives your flight number, address, number of passengers and amount of luggage in advance.

After landing, all you need to do is meet the driver and go to your destination.

🚗 If you need a car immediately after landing

If you are planning to travel actively around Cape Town and the Western Cape, you can skip the separate taxi ride to your accommodation and arrange a rental car to be delivered to the airport in advance.

This is especially convenient if your plans include the Winelands, the coast, hikes and trips outside Cape Town’s central areas.

And remember that South Africa drives on the left-hand side.

If after a long flight you are not sure you are ready to drive immediately, it may be easier to get to your accommodation by taxi or transfer first.

If you do not want to use apps, you can take an official airport taxi.

The main rule is the same: choose an authorised service rather than a random driver offering you a ride in the arrivals area.

🕐 Your arrival time matters too

• During the day, everything is easier: Uber, Bolt, official taxis and the option to collect a pre-booked rental car are all available.

• If you arrive late, especially if your accommodation is in an unfamiliar area, it is better to sort out the journey before your flight.

• After a long flight is not the best time to figure out where to go with suitcases, search for a car or walk around trying to find your accommodation in an unfamiliar place.

Before your flight

You only need to do a few things:

install Uber or Bolt, save your accommodation address, make sure you will have internet after landing and decide in advance whether you are taking a taxi, booking a transfer or collecting a car at the airport.

If you use an eSIM, it is convenient to install it before departure so you can get online immediately after landing.

The main thing is simply to know what your first step will be once you leave the terminal.

What to choose
