🇿🇦 Entry into South Africa

There is one problem with entry rules: an article can be perfectly accurate today and outdated a few months later.

So instead of trying to memorise visa rules for every country in the world, it is much more useful to understand where to check the requirements for your own passport, which documents need to be in order, and what changed for travellers in 2026.

The information was checked on August 20, 2026 using official South African sources. Before your trip, check the requirements again anyway. Visa and border rules can change.

🛂 Do you need a visa for South Africa?

It depends on your nationality and passport type.

South Africa has an official list of countries whose citizens can enter without applying for a visa in advance for a certain period.

For Russian citizens

At the time of checking, holders of ordinary Russian passports are included in the list of countries eligible for visa-free entry to South Africa for up to 90 days.

But I would not save that number somewhere in your notes and rely on it for the next few years.

Before buying tickets, or at least before departure, open the official list and check the current rules again.

If you have a passport from another country

The same list is useful for you too.

Find your country and check the Ordinary passport column. It shows whether you need a visa and how long visa-free entry is allowed for an ordinary passport.

If your country is not on the visa-exempt list, then it makes sense to check the visa or eVisa application process through the Department of Home Affairs.

📕 Check your passport

To enter South Africa, a foreign traveller must have a machine-readable passport.

The Border Management Authority also lists two important requirements:

• at least one blank page in the passport;
• the passport must remain valid for at least 30 days after the intended end of your stay in South Africa.

I would check this before buying a ticket, not on the morning of the flight.

✈️ Return ticket and money for the trip

The official Border Management Authority information also lists the following among the entry requirements:

• a return ticket or onward ticket;
• sufficient funds for the duration of the trip;
• a valid visa, if one is required for your passport;
• a yellow fever vaccination certificate, if your route falls under the relevant requirements.

So even if you are entering visa-free, it is better to have easy access to:

• your return or onward ticket;
• your accommodation booking or the address where you will be staying;
• access to a bank card or other funds for the trip.

You do not need to print half your life on paper.

The important thing is that you can quickly open the documents on your phone even without internet.

📱 Traveller Declaration became mandatory from July 1, 2026

This one really is important.

From July 1, 2026, travellers entering or leaving South Africa by air, road, rail or sea must submit an online Traveller Declaration.

The requirement also applies to foreign tourists.

This is not a visa and not an entry permit.

The Traveller Declaration is part of customs control. It is used to declare goods, currency and other information required by SARS.

When to complete it

The declaration must be submitted no earlier than 24 hours before departure.

If you are flying to South Africa with a connection, use the final segment of your journey into South Africa as the reference point.

For example:

Moscow → Dubai → Cape Town

The declaration should be submitted no earlier than 24 hours before the Dubai → Cape Town flight.

If you do not manage to complete it in advance, that does not automatically mean you will be refused entry.

SARS says that assistance and terminals for submitting the declaration are available at border points.

But it is much less stressful to do it beforehand.

The Traveller Declaration only became mandatory in July 2026. :::

👶 If you are travelling with a child

This is one area where I definitely would not rely on old articles or messages from chats.

The requirements differ depending on:

• whether the child needs a visa;
• whether they are travelling with both parents;
• with one parent;
• with another accompanying adult;
• or unaccompanied.

The Border Management Authority has a separate current table of requirements for children, including foreign visa-exempt children.

If the child is not travelling with both parents, I would check this section directly before the trip and prepare all documents in advance.

🟡 Yellow fever

For a normal direct trip, this may not come up at all.

But a yellow fever vaccination certificate may be required if your journey starts in a risk country or passes through a relevant risk area.

So here it is important to look not only at the country you come from, but also your entire flight route.

If you have an unusual or long connection in another country, check the requirements for your specific route.

🌍 Do not forget about the transit country

South African rules are only half of the journey.

If you are travelling through a third country, check separately:

• whether you need a transit visa;
• whether you are allowed to leave the transit area;
• whether any additional documents are required;
• whether the rules change for a long layover or an airport change.

For this, you need to check the official immigration resource of the transit country, because South Africa does not set those rules.

✅ What I would check before departure

A few days before the trip, open this article again and go through the list:

• passport is valid for the required period;
• there is a blank page;
• visa rules have been checked specifically for your nationality;
• you have a return or onward ticket;
• your accommodation booking or address is saved;
• transit-country requirements have been checked;
• if travelling with a child, you have checked the documents required for your exact situation;
• if your route involves yellow fever risk countries, you have checked the certificate requirements;
• within 24 hours before the final segment into South Africa, you have completed the Traveller Declaration.

After that, the most boring part of the preparation is done.
