Two Oceans Aquarium
An aquarium that puts two very different South African ocean worlds side by side.

Two Oceans Aquarium opened at the V&A Waterfront in 1995 after eight years of research and roughly eighteen months of construction.
The name explains the central idea rather well.
South Africa’s coastline is shaped by two very different ocean systems: the cold Benguela Current in the west and the warmer Agulhas Current in the east.
It is worth avoiding the popular image of two neat bands of water meeting directly beside Cape Town. The real oceanography is much more complex.
Inside, the contrast is explored through animals and habitats. One of the defining exhibits is the living kelp forest, which makes the cold Benguela ecosystem feel very real.
Over time, the aquarium also grew beyond being somewhere people simply come to look at marine life.
Its work now includes education, sea-turtle rescue, rehabilitation and release programmes.
So Two Oceans makes more sense as an introduction to South African marine ecology than simply another family attraction at the Waterfront.
In short: 🌊 Two ocean systems · 🌿 Living kelp forest · 🐢 Sea-turtle rehabilitation · 🐠 South African marine life · 🎓 Education programmes · 📍 V&A Waterfront
