When to Visit South Africa, Cape Town

In Cape Town, everything is the other way around. While it's winter in the Northern Hemisphere, summer begins here.

That's why so many people arrive expecting a classic beach holiday, only to be surprised by the cold ocean, strong winds and constantly changing weather.

Every season feels completely different here. It all depends on what you're coming for — beaches, hiking, wine estates, whales, safaris or the flower season.

☀️ Summer | December – March

Peak season: October, November, December, January and February.

This is when Cape Town welcomes the highest number of visitors. Prices go up, and finding good accommodation at the last minute is something close to impossible.

If you're visiting at the end of December, plan your itinerary and book restaurants and tours in advance. It's also holiday season for the locals, so many places fill up quickly.

Of course, there are plenty of reasons why people love this time of year:

  • long daylight hours;
  • incredible sunsets;
  • every beach has its own character — white sand, turquoise water and dramatic cliffs.

Tell us which season is your favourite and why — we'd love to share your experience with everyone.

The ocean stays cold — it is the Atlantic, after all.

But that's part of Cape Town's charm: the contrast between the summer heat and the icy water. Swimming is absolutely possible if you know the right beaches (I've shared my favourites in Telegram @capetown_uar).

Cape Town isn't your typical beach destination. People come here for so much more.

There's just one tiny little thing to keep in mind — the wind. Sometimes it can literally blow all your plans away, and that's completely normal here.

💡 DON'T FORGET: No matter which season you're visiting, always pack something warm. A windbreaker or a hoodie will come in handy at any time of the year.

🌧️ Winter | June – August

Winter gives Cape Town a completely different mood.

A roaring ocean, strong winds, low clouds rolling over the mountains and rainy days... everything slows down and resets after the busy summer season.

Evenings by the fireplace, the sound of crackling wood, saunas, hot coffee, world-class wineries and whales in the ocean — this is how many people fall in love with Cape Town in winter.

🍂 Autumn | April – May

A very underrated time to visit and, in my opinion, one of the best seasons to experience Cape Town.

Summer slowly gives way to winter, while the city stays just as postcard-perfect — only with a calmer, more relaxed atmosphere.

Why I love this season:

  • warm days;
  • cool evenings;
  • lower prices than in summer;
  • more availability at restaurants and wine estates;
  • golden sunsets;
  • less wind.

🌼 Spring & Flower Season | September – November

From the end of August, nature slowly begins to wake up. It's especially noticeable outside Cape Town, where entire fields become covered with wildflowers.

South Africa is one of the richest countries in the world when it comes to plant diversity. Honestly, it almost feels like a crime not to treat yourself — and the people you love — to flowers while you're here.

At farmers' markets, supermarkets and flower shops you'll find stunning bouquets all year round at surprisingly affordable prices. Proteas, pincushions, wax flowers, eucalyptus and dozens of other plants that many people have only ever seen in photographs.

Here's an interesting fact.

The flower season depends on how much rain falls during winter. Most flowers only bloom during the day and only when the sun is shining.

The entire bloom lasts just a few weeks. Arrive a day too early or a little too late, and you might find yourself looking at an empty field instead.

🐋 Whale Season

If seeing whales is one of the main reasons for your trip, the best time to visit is between August and November.

The peak season is:

  • September;
  • October;
  • November.

The best places for whale watching are Hermanus and the southern coastline.

You can spot whales:

  • directly from the shore;
  • or by joining a boat tour.

I've already shared a detailed guide to Hermanus, including where to stay, where to eat and how to book a whale-watching tour.

❤️ And, as always, I'd absolutely love to hear about your experience after your trip. Sometimes one story inspires someone to spend their day a little differently and for someone else, it becomes the reason to finally book that ticket to South Africa.

FAQ

Sometimes, absolutely. You can spend ages doing your hair, step outside... and a minute later meet a brand-new version of yourself. 😄 That's just Cape Town. After a while, checking the wind forecast becomes just as normal as checking the weather.
Don't try to see everything in just a few days. Cape Town is a city to experience, not simply tick off your travel list. Leave room for spontaneous stops, beautiful sunsets and slow breakfasts overlooking the ocean — those are usually the moments you'll remember the most.
It really depends on why you're coming. If you're dreaming of beaches and long sunny days, choose summer. If whale watching, cosy evenings by the fireplace and a glass of South African red wine sound more like your kind of trip, winter is magical. And if you ask me, autumn is the perfect balance of beautiful weather, lower prices and fewer crowds.
