Discover why local products are considered among the best in the world, what is worth bringing home, and where to find the most authentic souvenirs.

The Cape Town region is impossible to imagine without vineyards, family farms, local markets, small artisan producers and restaurants that cook according to the seasons. Here, people have great respect for food, the land and those who grow it.

That's why many visitors take home not souvenirs, but the taste of South Africa.

🌿 Why Are Cape Town's Products So Special?

The Western Cape is one of South Africa's most important agricultural regions.

This is where you'll find vineyards, citrus orchards, avocado farms, olive groves, berry plantations, nut farms, rooibos tea and dozens of other crops. Many products come from small family-run farms that have been operating for generations.

Cape Town has a strong farm-to-table culture. Many restaurants work closely with local producers, while some even grow their own vegetables, herbs and edible plants on-site.

As a result, menus change constantly throughout the year. Chefs cook with whatever is at its seasonal best, so many dishes appear only for a few months before returning with the next harvest.

This close connection to nature is one of the reasons Cape Town's food scene is so unique.

🌍 A Sustainable Approach

South Africa has long been recognised as one of the world's leading wine-producing countries, but its agricultural story goes far beyond wine.

The region actively promotes sustainable farming. Many farms and wineries follow environmentally responsible practices, hold international certifications and place great importance on protecting the natural environment.

Across the Western Cape you'll also find agricultural schools, research centres and educational programmes that help develop farming, introduce modern growing techniques and support local producers.

When you buy products from farms, markets or wineries, you're supporting not just a business, but a tradition of craftsmanship that has been built over decades.

🍷 What to Bring Home from Cape Town

🍷 Wine

South Africa is one of the world's leading wine producers.

The best place to buy wine is directly from the wineries. Not only will you find a wider selection, but you'll also take home a bottle from a place you've personally visited.

If visiting wineries isn't part of your itinerary, you'll still find an excellent selection at Woolworths, Checkers and Pick n Pay.

Buying wine at the airport should be a last resort, as the selection is usually smaller and prices tend to be higher.

🍵 Rooibos Tea

Authentic rooibos is grown almost exclusively in South Africa.

You'll find dozens of varieties, from classic rooibos to blends with vanilla, citrus, honey or spices.

It's lightweight, easy to pack and makes a perfect gift.

🥩 Biltong & Droëwors

Biltong is one of South Africa's most iconic foods.

Choose factory-sealed or vacuum-packed versions for easier transportation.

If you're looking for something with an even longer shelf life, try Droëwors — traditional dried sausages that travel exceptionally well.

☕ Rusks

Traditional South African biscuits that are meant to be dipped into tea or coffee.

A simple, comforting treat that's found in homes across the country.

🥃 Amarula

The famous cream liqueur made from the fruit of the marula tree.

Besides the liqueur itself, you'll also find Amarula chocolates, biscuits, fudge and other sweets that make excellent gifts.

🫒 Olive Oil

Many wineries also produce their own extra virgin olive oil.

It's difficult to find outside South Africa, making it one of the country's best gourmet souvenirs.

🌶️ Spices & Sauces

Popular favourites include:

  • braai spice blends
  • peri-peri sauces
  • chutneys
  • marinades
  • locally made salts and seasonings

These flavours will keep reminding you of South Africa long after your trip.

🍬 Sweet Treats

Look out for:

  • locally made chocolate
  • Zoo biscuits
  • Montagu dried fruit snacks
  • jams and marmalades
  • Woolworths chocolate eggs
  • Amarula fudge

Most of these are easy to pack and can be found in almost every major supermarket.

🛍️ Non-Food Souvenirs

Watershed Market

One of Cape Town's best places to shop for gifts.

You'll find local designers, ceramics, textiles, leather goods, jewellery, home décor and a wide range of handcrafted products.

Oranjezicht City Farm Market

A great place to combine breakfast, a walk and souvenir shopping.

Alongside excellent food, you'll discover natural cosmetics, artisan products and goods from local producers.

Natural Cosmetics

Markets, farms and wineries often sell handmade soaps, creams, oils and candles scented with fynbos, lavender, citrus and other native plants.

Home Décor

Blankets, baskets, textiles, ceramics, wooden crafts and home accessories inspired by African design make beautiful and practical souvenirs.

🌸 Protea Flower

The protea is South Africa's national flower.

If you'd like to take home a fresh bouquet, the easiest place to buy one is at the Woolworths store in Cape Town International Airport before your flight.
