South Africa is divided into malaria-risk and malaria-free areas, so there's no need to panic just check the map.

Where There Is No Malaria
Western Cape
Cape Town and everything around it:
- the coastline;
- wine estates;
- Garden Route.
If your itinerary includes Cape Town, the ocean and the south of the country, malaria prevention is usually not necessary.
If you're unsure, speak directly with your doctor and discuss it with them, rather than asking in online chats.
Where There Is a Risk
The malaria-risk area is located in the north-east of South Africa.
Mainly:
📍 Kruger National Park 📍 Limpopo 📍 Mpumalanga 📍 parts of KwaZulu-Natal
If you're planning a safari or travelling to these regions, this becomes an important question.
Be sure to consult your doctor and discuss:
- whether you need malaria tablets;
- whether any additional vaccinations are recommended.
